Because of his physical deformity, which prevents him from walking upright, the King nicknames him "Hop-Frog". ![]() ![]() Both Hop-Frog and his best friend, the dancer Trippetta (also small, but beautiful and well-proportioned), have been stolen from their homeland and essentially function as slaves. This king has an insatiable sense of humor: "he seemed to live only for joking". The court jester Hop-Frog, "being also a dwarf and a cripple", is the much-abused "fool" of the unnamed king. Hop-Frog, Trippetta, the king and his councilors, 1935 illustration by Arthur Rackham In front of the king's guests, Hop-Frog murders them all by setting their costumes on fire before escaping with Trippetta.Ĭritical analysis has suggested that Poe wrote the story as a form of literary revenge against a woman named Elizabeth F. Taking revenge on the king and his cabinet for the king's striking of his friend and fellow dwarf Trippetta, he dresses the king and his cabinet as orangutans for a masquerade. The title character, a person with dwarfism taken from his homeland, becomes the jester of a king particularly fond of practical jokes. Tigana was one of the provinces in the Western Palm. The 9 provinces of Palm peninsula have been under a two decade long siege between two sorcerers: Brandin of Ygrath, conquering of Western Palm, and Alberico of Barbadior, conquering the Eastern Palm. I am actually quite impressed how properly fantasy this one is compared to the latter (which kinda reads like alternative/historical fiction). In spite of his deadpan naturalism and rather laconic language use, the author manages to keep his readers on their toes thanks to the novel’s much accomplished suspense concerning the fate of the two protagonists. By comparing The Road to some of his earlier fiction, the article attempts to establish where those elements of discontinuity become most apparent. Most likely influenced by some recent events that have deeply shaken the country and others affecting his personal life, McCarthy can be seen to abandon the landscapes and vernacular rhythms that had become the staple of his artistic performance. Apart from the fact that the Rhode Island-born writer embarks for a first time in his long career on a popular sci-fi sub-genre such as the post-apocalyptic novel, the book exhibits a number of thematic, structural, and stylistic patterns which differ quite radically from those found in his earlier novels. This article argues that Cormac McCarthy’s latest novel, The Road (2006), marks a clear departure from the interests and aesthetics he showed in his earlier works of fiction. ![]() |
